Baby Bedding

Baby bedding has recently come under fire lately. As pediatricians are learning more and more about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) we are discovering that some items can be dangerous in the crib. Along with the elimination of most bedding, placing the infant on their back to sleep are crucial steps to preventing SIDS.

Baby bumpers are a piece of baby bedding that many parents mistakenly believe they need. But doctors caution that the baby’s head can become entangled in the bumpers, wedged between the crib and the bumper, and there is also evidence that suggests the bumpers prevent adequate air flow around the baby- causing carbon dioxide to pool. If a parent really feels they need bumpers they should follow ensure the strings are between seven to nine inches long and that the bumper is tied on at both the top and bottom.  There are a few companies that make mesh bumpers which attach with Velcro, they are much safer

The only real piece of baby bedding that is recommended is a fitted sheet. Blankets can suffocate young babies that cannot move themselves. Some parents however, feel that the nursery isn’t complete without cute bedding. If they choose to purchase a baby bedding set they can use the blanket/ comforter as a wall hanging, and the use of the bumpers should be considered deeply.
